Dont use thugs, Anambra police warns politicians

The Anambra State Police Command on Wednesday warned politicians to desist from the use of thugs in the forthcoming general elections in the state in order not to contravene the Electoral Act and the recent order issued by President Mohammadu Buhari.

Buhari had on Monday while speaking at a national caucus meeting of the All Progressives Congress in Abuja, said ballot box snatchers would pay with their lives as security agencies had been given the go-ahead to be ruthless with them.

In an interview with our correspondent at the Anambra State Police Command headquarters in Awka, the Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed, also noted that ballot snatchers would be prosecuted based on the dictates of the Electoral Act.

He said, “The command has signed a peace accord with various contestants, as well as party representatives. However, we want to warn them not to use thugs to disrupt the election process, as we all know the latest directive.”

On ballot box snatching, Mohammed said, “This is an electoral offence. Other offences such as vote buying, multiple voting, etc, are all electoral offences and there are procedures through which such offences are prosecuted.”
